The new Opel MOKKA X may be small in size (only 4.28 meters short) but the sub-compact SUV is definitely big in popularity. The predecessor of the latest coup from the Rüsselsheim-based carmaker, the first generation Mokka, has already recorded more than 600,000 customer orders since its introduction in 2012. The stylish looks, lively engine line-up along with the adventurous personality, unrivalled connectivity offering and array of state-of-the-art technologies have seen it become one of the most popular vehicles in its segment across Europe. Opel obviously decided to maintain all of the strengths of the predecessor Mokka when developing the new Opel MOKKA X while simultaneously making notable tweaks to make the bestseller even more desirable.

The Opel MOKKA X’ new exterior design displays a bold attitude. Its new front look is aligned with Opel’s new design including a wing-shaped horizontal front grille and the dominant, sharp double wing signature of the LED daytime running lights. The front fascia also gets more precisely and elegantly sculpted surfaces. Visually this gives it a wider, more solid and masculine stance. It is continued at the rear with another double wing signature also featured in the optionally available LED tail lamps. The body side retains its sculpted and elegant traits and sporty edge with muscular and athletic lower body lines, energized by Opel’s typical ‘blade’ that sweeps upwards to the rear. New vibrant colors such as ‘Amber Orange’ or ‘Absolute Red’ along with the optional OPC Line Sport Pack with front and rear lips and the side rockers add further emphasis to the sporty and exclusive appearance.

On the inside, the Opel MOKKA X’ ambiance has been totally redefined. The new instrument panel is organized around more horizontally oriented elements. It looks both simpler and purer, as well as sharper and more precise in its execution. The center stack has been redeveloped around the 7 and 8-inch color touchscreens of the new generation infotainment systems. It now impresses with refined elegance and a purer design with less buttons – many functions are now accessible via the capacitive touchscreens. Furthermore, the central information display comes with improved readability thanks to new, crisp 3.5-inch mono and 4.2-inch color screens with white LCD illumination.

The sub-compact SUV comes optionally with an intelligent adaptive all-wheel drive system that helped its forebear win two All-wheel Drive Car of the Year Awards in Germany. The system with electronic, multi-disk clutch system can seamlessly distribute power between the front and rear axle from 100:0 to 50:50, while in normal everyday use it runs as an economical front-wheel drive car. It is activated when the Opel MOKKA X is stationary to prevent wheel slip at take-off. It also engages unobtrusively in a split second as soon as the driver depresses the clutch pedal (“active on demand system”). Once up and running, all power is transferred to the front wheels and the all-wheel drive system is only engaged when driving situations require it to improve the traction, especially on wet and slippery surfaces. On wet and rainy roads, an occasional redistribution of drivetrain power is available. Depending on vehicle status and road conditions, torque can be transferred to the rear axle. So even in short situations, for instance when hitting a pothole or an ice spot the additional torque in the rear wheels provides maximal traction and stability, thus increasing the feeling of safety and with it driving pleasure.

The all-wheel drive system is available in combination with the well-known 1.4-liter gasoline engine with 103 kW/140 hp (NEDC cycle fuel consumption: urban 8.3-8.21 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.6-5.51 l/100 km, combined 6.5-6.41 l/100 km; 152-1491 g/km CO2) and the critically acclaimed 1.6 CDTI ‘whisper diesel’ with 100 kW/136 hp (NEDC cycle fuel consumption: urban 5.2-5.01 l/100 km, extra-urban 4.4-4.21 l/100 km, combined 4.7-4.51 l/100 km; 124-1191 g/km CO2). In both cases, it comes with a six-speed manual transmission.

Elsewhere, Opel will also cater for the needs of customers looking for an all-wheel drive variant with six-speed automatic transmission by combining the intelligent system with the new generation, top-of-the-range 112 kW/152 hp 1.4-liter ECOTEC® Direct Injection Turbo (NEDC cycle fuel consumption: urban 7.9-7.81 l/100 km, extra-urban 5.7-5.61 l/100 km, combined 6.5-6.41 l/100 km; 150-1481 g/km CO2) that made its debut in the new Opel Astra.
